ADA Compliance/Accessibility Solutions
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law, not a building code. This act is designed to provide protection for people with disabilities. Two ADA criteria affect the door closer selection and adjustments- opening force and time to close.
The accessibility standards require interior hinged, sliding, or folding doors, other than fire doors, to be able to be opened with a maximum force of five pounds.
Additionally, door closers must be adjusted so that it takes at least five seconds for the door to move from an open position of 90 degrees to 12 degrees from the latch.
